Lourdes Grotto was never meant to be a runway. That is exactly what made it such a spectacular one.
ArtFashion Aruba 2026, the annual runway show held during Art Week Aruba, built suspense around a venue marked “TOP SECRET.” Tickets read “Somewhere in San Nicolas,” revealing nothing of the sacred setting to come.
In a remote corner of Seroe Preto, Lourdes Grotto rises in sweeping tiers of stone beneath a 1,500-pound statue of the Virgin Mary. For one night, models wove across every level, transforming this place of prayer into their magnificent and unlikely runway.
With barely a star visible, the night sky was pure purple. Tall cacti rose in silhouette as steady breezes moved through the grotto and amber and violet light washed across the stone.
Music pulsed through the grotto. Cameras covered every angle, a drone circled overhead, and live screens magnified every movement.
Before the first model appeared, the scale of the production was impossible to miss.
Recycled water bottles became silky fabric for Aruban designer Ronchi de Cuba’s CORALIA collection for Ronchi Resort, with mix-and-match separates in turquoise, coral and sea-inspired green.
Guided by local designer Andrew Steba, Art Explosion brought nine young designers to the runway in polished looks that caught the breeze.
The entire grotto was alive with movement. Dozens of diverse models confidently crisscrossed the tiers above us, claiming the uneven stone terrain with remarkable grace in heels.
Shimmering formalwear flowed down the stone runway in champagne, silver, soft pink and jade green. Sweeping feathers lifted into the breeze from a champagne gown that became my absolute favorite of the night. Its model wore it with complete command.
Quickening the pace, bold African-inspired patterns swept onto the runway. The models danced, Afrobeats filled the grotto, and we jumped to our feet.
El Jardín Secreto bloomed across the stone in dramatic pinks, deep blacks and splashy florals. Sequins, jewels, plunging necklines and bare shoulders gave the body-skimming gowns a feminine glamour.
Transforming a place of worship into a runway was as controversial as it was spectacular. No matter where models appeared, the eye kept returning to the Virgin Mary at the center of the grotto.
The Nature × Mankind theme was impossible to miss. The breeze lifted fabrics and feathers. Colored light changed the shape of the stone. Music traveled across the terraces.
Nature provided the runway, and the models made it their own.
