The arrival of fresh Dutch "Hollandse Nieuwe" Herring has been postponed by Dutch authorities

The arrival of fresh Dutch "Hollandse Nieuwe" Herring has been postponed by Dutch authorities

The start of the herring season in the Netherlands has been moved from June 14th to June 22nd, as decided earlier this week by the Dutch Herring Wholesalers Association. The reason for this is that the herring has reached the required fat percentage later than expected. According to the Dutch Fish Bureau, this may be due to a significantly lower water temperature than usual this year.

Fat Percentage of Hollandse Nieuwe and its processing

Hollandse Nieuwe must have a minimum fat percentage of 16 percent, which was only achieved last weekend. Now, the process of processing the herring into Hollandse Nieuwe begins. First, the intestines are removed, and the fish needs to mature. Subsequently, the herring is salted and frozen for at least 24 hours.

Delay and Consequences for the herring festival in Aruba

As a result of the delay, the arrival of fresh herring in Aruba will be postponed by one week. The annual traditional herring festival at Café the Plaza will now take place on Friday, June 23rd, instead of Friday, June 16th. Dries van Ierberghe from Aruba Wine & Dine explains, "We have postponed the welcome reception by one week. Instead of June 16th, this year's herring festival at Café the Plaza will be held on June 23rd. The authentic fresh herring will only be available from June 22nd, so it is a logical choice for us to postpone the arrival of this delicious fish for a week. After all, we want to offer only the finest fresh herring at Café the Plaza for the ultimate enjoyment and true experience."

For just 5 florins, guests can indulge in the traditional "Herring with or without onions." For those who prefer something heartier, the "Herring sandwich with or without onions" is available for only 6 florins. The delicate flavors of the herring are a true delight for seafood enthusiasts.

In addition to herring, Café the Plaza also offers the beloved Dutch dish, Kibbeling. For 8 florins, guests can savor tender and crispy pieces of fried fish served with tartar sauce. This delightful treat is sure to please both seafood lovers and those looking to try a unique Dutch specialty.

Festive atmosphere and activities at Café the Plaza

Throughout the day, guests will be treated to fantastic music by DJ Edje and DJ PTR, creating the perfect ambiance for the festivities. An outdoor bar will be set up to enhance the celebratory mood, with special offers on Coronita and Budweiser. Each bottle is priced at an unbeatable 6 florins, allowing you to raise a toast to the occasion (bucket deal of 35 florins).

Café the Plaza also offers additional activities for everyone to enjoy. The little ones can participate in the Dino Jump, an exciting inflatable attraction that guarantees hours of playfulness.
